Carnival: Culture in Action and the Trinidad Experience

The main event of the Oruro Carnival is a procession of thousands of dancers and musicians. The sumptuous costumes, beautifully painted masks, folk dances and songs bear witness to the influence of indigenous and Spanish cultures.

Carnival: Culture in Action

It is this transnational foundation that grants organizations (like WIADCA) authority over an important aspect of West Indian culture in the City. That is, a transnational focus allows organizations to gain some control over the West Indian voice in New York City. That is because it ensures the West Indian that a major component of West Indian culture (in this case, the Brooklyn Carnival) will not be just another cheap knock-off of the Trinidad Carnival. Instead, it will be seen as a true expression of Caribbean culture and pride.

Like many organizations, Carnival was too focused on response and being reactive. Under Peter Anderson the EHS, Risk and Safety teams came together to better evaluate risk, link to controls and determine actions to take.

The corporate team had to work closely with the ships and the Environmental Compliance Officers. Changing the culture within leadership was a critical step in the journey. An essential change was having Peter Anderson, the Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer, participate in the weekly leadership calls with the CEO, CFO and other top level executives. By bringing compliance to the highest level of discussion, it allowed issues to be raised and also sent a message to the rest of the organization.

Carnival also developed a culture action plan that leveraged information from staff and created a path to meaningfully change the culture at Carnival when it came to compliance. Since putting these leadership changes in place and implementing the culture plan, the number of reported compliance issues by staff have more than doubled.

The promotion and advancement of culture is integral to the work of the Association of Caribbean States (ACS). Efforts in this regard are focused on promoting the cultural diversity of the region and facilitating exchanges for language learning and cultural immersion to enhance co-operation among the countries and strengthen the process of regional integration.

One of the most unifying events and cultural and creative extravaganza, which is celebrated in the region is Carnival. Carnival finds its social and historic origin in the region and is an expression of culture that encapsulates music, dance, costumes, pageantry and performance. While Carnival is celebrated in various styles and with slightly different names throughout the Greater Caribbean, there is one common interest: the manifestation of a cultural pluralism amongst its participants.

Culture in its many forms and expressions functions as tourist sites and attractions, which can be both educational as well as entertaining to visitors. Tourism in turn has proven to add value by serving as one of the main driving forces to preserve and strengthen indigenous cultural identity, while at the same time making a positive contribution to social and economic development.

Research indicates that in the Greater Caribbean region there is need to strengthen the linkages between tourism and culture. This can be achieved by countries placing greater emphasis on developing cultural products and activities while simultaneously showcasing more of the cultural aspects in its tourism promotion efforts.

I remember trying to answer questions as a person of blended cultures; my question was which one am I? African, British, Portuguese, Indian, Chinese, Caribbean or American or am I any other? Then I realized I am all of the above but most importantly all these are me and I am them no matter what one sees when they look at me, I am of the blended race called humanity- a key ingredient why the human race is not extinct.

The islands are made up a group of indigenous people a result of the blending of many cultures, most of African descent but in reality we decent all from one source which is the human race, we just paint the rainbow of humanity with more beautiful colors when we mix and meet:

Shares of Shoe Carnival advanced more than 2.5% in premarket action and gapped up at the open. The move set a new all-time high and we don't think it will be the last. The short-interest on the stock is running near 15% which is enough by itself to keep price action moving higher for several days. Add to that a strong technical backdrop, record-setting results, and increased guidance and we see this stock moving up by several multiples. Trading at only 9X its guidance for earnings it is a deep value as well.

In London, a spoof newspaper was produced, alongside other publicity. The day itself featured a Critical Mass and an action by the Campaign Against Arms Trade, before a large march converged in different streams upon the London International Financial Futures Exchange for a street party. Globally there were protests in over 40 cities, including Barcelona, Montevideo, Port Harcourt and San Francisco. Using then new technology, the protests were reported on the internet by independent media activists from London and Sydney, in a step towards the Indymedia network.

In London, there was a large march planned for midday and autonomous actions in the morning. A Critical Mass bicycle ride brought the City of London traffic to a standstill in rush hour.[6] The Campaign Against Arms Trade closed down a Lloyds bank with a 'die-in'.[4] The Association of Autonomous Astronauts began their 10-day festival Space 1999: Ten Days Which Shook The Universe with a blockade of the Lockheed Martin offices at Berkeley Square.[7][8] The electronic civil disobedience group called for a virtual sit-in of the Mexican embassy in solidarity with the Zapatista Army of National Liberation and brought the embassy website to a standstill.[9]

As some of you know, I emphasize application. Reading and learning is great - yet nothing improves when you don't apply and experiment with insights and tips. I hope you read the posts that speak to you most and apply some of their tips. Nothing improves if we don't take action.

Cultural criminology is not a crime theory in the narrower sense. Rather, it is a theoretical current that has emerged in the English-speaking world and, based on cultural studies and critical theories of criminality, understands deviance and phenomena of crime control as an interactionist, symbol-mediated process and analyses them with recourse to primarily ethnological research methods.

The concept of criminological Verstehen (Ferrell & Hamm, 1998) goes back to the German sociologist Max Weber (here: Verstehende Soziologie). At the centre of understanding (or interpretative) sociology/ criminology is social action. Social action is constitutive for social development. The focus is on the acting actors and their respective constructions of meaning that underlie their actions. The task of understanding or interpretive sociology/criminology is to analyse these subjective constructions of meaning and their deconstruction, taking into account the social and historical framework conditions. 2ff7e9595c
